Nathan and Sarah Caplan, pictured at left, were Pearl's parents.
Nathan Keva Caplan was the eldest of three surviving sons out of five children born to Abraham Caplan and Marcia Riva ("Minnie") Kaufman. Nathan was born in Bragin, Minsk Gubernia, Russia (now Belarus) on [date: Aug 20, 1880 (VF); Aug 5, 1878? 1879? Sep 5, 1880? 1873? 1882?].
Nathan's younger brothers were: Harry Caplan (b. 1884, d. Jan 23, 1929) and Zusman Caplan (b. Dec 25, 1890, d. Nov 1982). Zusman was married to Gita Gouber DeBoix (b. Aug 10, 1896, d. Jan 28, 1990). Zusman and Gita's graves are located in Hillside Memorial Park cemetery in Los Angeles.
Sarah Greisman was born to Osher Zelig Greisman and Petha Rotenberg c. 1886-88 somewhere in the Austria/Hungary empire. She immigrated to Canada as a young girl (c. 1898) and lived in Toronto. Sarah had at least two brothers: Henry (born c. 1866) and Louis (born c. 1890). At the time of the 1901 Canada Census, Sarah (age 14) and her brother Louis (age 11) lived with their much-older brother Henry (age 35) and his family (wife Fanny, daughter Pearl, and sons Moses, Louis and Samuel).
Nathan immigrated to Canada c. 1904. Nathan and Sarah were married at the Sons of England Hall in Toronto on June 28 (29?), 1909. She passed herself off as a little younger than the 21 years of age she indicated on the marriage certificate.(Ref)
In 1918, according to Nathan's draft registration card, the family then lived at 784 Brush St. in Detroit. Nathan worked as a machinist at the Michigan Radiator & Fender Company.
At the time of the 1920 United States Census (lines 16-19), Sarah and Nathan were still living at the same Detroit address with their daughter Pearl (age 9) and son Abraham, aka "Allan" (age 6). Someone by the name of Isadore Winkler, age 23, seems to have lived with the family at that time as well.
In November 1921, Nathan and Sarah welcomed their third child: a daughter they named Marcie (after Nathan's mother, Marcia Riva Kauffman).
Sarah died in Detroit on August 10, 1924, by suicide (see Sarah's death certificate).
Nathan moved from Detroit to California in [date/some time after 1935].
At the time of the 1940 United States Census, Nathan and his three children lived together in Los Angeles at 3316 San Marino Street.
In 1942, Nathan's WW II draft registration card shows him living at 817 So. Hobart Blvd., Los Angeles (see photo at right) and in business for himself. Nathan's grandson, Jim Holtz, remembers that the apartment had a Murphy bed.
Nathan died in Los Angeles on November 4, 1959. His grave is located in Section 6 of the Clover Hill Park Cemetery in Birmingham, MI (near Detroit), where his wife Sarah and his mother are also buried. (See cemetery plot map.)
