Alma Grace Carey was born March 26, 1899, to George Tiffany Carey and Libbie Phillips Carey in Harford, PA. She was one of nine children, of which eight survived to adulthood. Alma appears with her father in the photo to the left, taken c. 1902.
Alma grew up on a farm and attended Harford High School, graduating with a class of only xx students.
Alma loved to read and write, and following high school she had hopes of one day going to college. To earn money to pay for higher education, Alma left her childhood home on the farm and moved to Washington, D.C., where she took a job in the U.S. government. Alma tells the story of what happened next in a brief memoir that she wrote on the occasion of her 50th wedding anniversary.
A U.S. Census report from 1920 shows both Alma and Eric living in the Howell household in Washington, D.C.
Alma's grandchildren remember that she told them bedtime stories when they were young. Some of the stories told of Alma's experiences living on a farm when she was a young girl. The stories often had a moral character and taught important life lessons. The Magic Stew is one of the stories that Alma told to her grandchildren.
Alma is also remembered as a good cook.
